Amy,

I enjoyed perusing your exhibit and also discovered the essay, "Creole Family Politics in Uncle Tom's Cabin and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl" by Carolyn Vellenga Berman, while I was searching for evidence of the "gesture" and stereotyping in 19th century literature and illustrations. The effect of narratives and literature on racial and cultural identity is certainly rich with research potential and your selection warrants further reading.
