Photo of the Week: Yosemite Valley

The Cap of Liberty

From the Lawrence & Houseworth Collection at the Library of Congress, this image shows “The Cap of Liberty, 4,000 feet above Yo-Semite Valley and Nevada Fall, 700 feet high, Mariposa County.” This image was published in 1866, two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill that set aside Yosemite Valley and the nearby Mariposa Grove as protected areas held by the State of California.
